Hon. Hector Frangue sponsors Christmas Open Chess Tournament












Hon. Hector Frangue, Sangguniang Panlalawigan member of the Province of Antique, sponsored the just concluded Christmas Open Chess tournament. A young sports-oriented lawyer, SP Hector Frangue pledges his support to the chess activities of the Antique Chess Society and the promotion of the game of chess in the province as well. This is also in support of the Department of Education's (Dep Ed) Memorandum integrating chess in the school curriculum of Grade 4-6 and High School. A study shows that chess improves the analytical ability of a person and helps improve in the mental development of a student. Chess is a game of intelligence.
Von Steven Aquino won the event, his fourth in a row, with 4.5 points. Joselito Castro and Titus Loquias tied for 2nd and 3rd with 4 points apiece. Vea Alyssa Amedo was the best 12 under performer. Snacks were also served courtesy of SP Frangue. SP Hector Frangue promised a bigger chess tournament in the middle of February 2010.

Von Steven Aquino wins De Gracia Memorial Chess Tournament
























Von Steven Aquino scored another convincing tournament victory by capturing the 2nd De Gracia Memorial Chess Tournament last December 12-13, 2009. This year ending tournament of the Antique Chess Society is held in honor of the late Mrs. Juanita G. De Gracia. Von Steven Aquino scored 6.5 points in this 7-round Swiss System event. Seceond place went to Joselito Castro with 5.5 points. Tied in third to fourth places were Miguel Descalzo and Nick Contreras with 5 points. Rhian Namoc was the best female player while the best 12-Under players were Dominic Gille and Charlie Villaflor. 34 players participated.

Antique thrilled by GM So's triumph over Kamsky




The Antique chess players rejoiced over GM Wesley So's triumphed over GM Vassily Ivanchuk and GM Gata Kamsky in the ongoing Chess World Cup. Following the games live in the internet, the chess players rejoiced when the draw was agreed with Kamsky in their second game. Thus GM So will now be in the round of 16 in this knockout format. Congratulations GM Wesley So!!!

Aquino wins 1st Hector Frangue Open Chess








Von Steven Aquino scored back to back wins this November by capturing the 1st SP Hector Frangue Open Chess Tournament held November 28-29, 2009 at the Alex and Al Cafe and Snackhouse, Sibalom, Antique. Tied for second place were 13 year old Lou Vincent Baculna and veteran player Edwin Leabriz. Top elementary performers were Dominic Gille and Joycie Tiongco. A total of 22 players participated in this 5- round swiss system event,

A young and idealistic lawyer from Caluya, Antique, SP Hector Frangue recognizes the importance of Chess especially to the youth. Chess helps in the mental developoment and character of a person. Von Steven Aquino wins November 2009 Open Chess Tournament







Von Steven Aquino wins the just concluded November 2009 Edition of the Monthly Open Chess Tournament held at Alex and Al Cafe and Snackhouse, Sibalom, Antique. He scored a perfect 5 points in this five round Swiss system tournament. He defeated Miguel Descalzo, Nelson Trayfalgar, and Arnel Amar in the third to fifth round respectively. Nelson Trayfalgar Jr. got second place with four points. Edwin Leabriz got third place with 3.5 points. Joselito Castro, Deonato Petinglay, and Arnel Amar tied for fourth to sixth place. Best elementary performers were Teny Sandoy and Joycee Tiongco. 19 players participated.

Flaviano Atienza wins Under 12 Chess Tournament





11 year old Flaviano Atienza wins the October leg of the quarterly 12 Under Chess Tournament held last October 31, 2009 at the Alex and Al cafe and Snackhouse, Sibalom Antique. The highly confident Atienza won all his games in this five round event.
Defending champion Vea Alyssa Amedo came in second. Third place was Elementary District Meet Champion Joycee M. Tiongco, 10 years old, of Brgy. Imparayan, Sibalom Antique. The next tournament will be on the last week of January 2010.
After more than a year of holding these tournaments, tremendous improvements have been obeserved on playing strengths of these youngsters. A year ago they were merely 'patsy' players. Now, one of them is playing on the strength of a college varsity player! More youngsters have also shown interests in chess as compared to previous years. Natural talent is important but it takes constant practice to really excel in chess.

The November Edition of the monthly Open Chess Tournament will be on November 7-8, 2009 at the Alex and Al Cafe and Snackhouse, Sibalom, Antique. This will be played on a 5-round, Swiss system, one hour play to finish format. Play starts at 9:30 a.m. of November 7. No registration fee is required.

Governor Perez Cup on December


Governor Salvacion Perez, a chess player during her student days, will be sponsoring the Governor Salvacion Perez Cup on December 2009. This chess event will help boost the morale and enthusiasm of chess players in Antique. Details of this big event is still being ironed out.

John Mark Grasparil wins October 2009 Open Chess








John Mark Grasparil won convincingly the just concluded October 2009 Edition of the monthly Open Chess Tournament. He scored 6.5 points out of a possible 7 in this seven round Swiss system event. He defeated second seeded Nelson Trayfalgar in the 3rd round, Nick Contreras in the 4th round, Generoso Perez in the Sixth and Top seeded Miguel Descalzo in the last round.

Nelson Trayfalgar jr. finished second with 6 points. Generoso Perez and Edwin Leabriz finished tied at 3rd and 4th places. Von Steven Aquino finished 5th place. A total of 30 players participated. Sibalom Water District sponsored this tournament. The prizes were awarded by Engr. Jonathan De Gracia, General Manager of Sibalom Water District and President of the Antique Chess Society.

October Edition of the Open Chess tournament starts




The October Edition of the Open Chess Tournament started yesterday at the Sibalom Water District office. A total of 30 participants joined the tournament. The cash prizes were sponsored by the Sibalom Water District to mark the occasion of its 14th year anniversary.
Hon. Prospero Picahay Jr., LWUA Chairman and NCFP President, was not able to attend due to more important and pressing matters. He was requested by President Arroyo to assist in the relief operations in northern Luzon. He , however, called that his heart is in Sibalom at that moment.
The ceremonial opening moves was done by 13-year old Lou Vincent Baculna, a West Visayan Meet champion and Palaro veteran, and Engr. Jonathan De Gracai, President of the Antique Chess Society and General Manager of Sibalom Water District.

Nelson Trayfalgar Jr. wins September 2009 Open Edition











Nelson Trayfalgar Jr. won the recently concluded September 2009 Open Chess Tournament held last September 5-6, 2009 at the Alex and Al Cafe and Snackhouse, Sibalom Antique. Nelson Trayfalgar displayed his mastery over a field of 18 chess participants. Tied for second to third places were Edwin Leabriz and Nick Contrearas. Fourth place was defending champion and top seeded Miguel Descalzo.

Descalzo wins August 2009 Chess Open again!











Top seeded Miguel Descalzo proved once again his superiority in chess by winning the August 2009 Edition of the Sibalom Open Chess tournament held last August 8-9, 2009 at the Alex and Al Cafe and Snackhouse, Sibalom Antique. Descalzo drew his last round game against Von Steven Aquino who finished tied for second to third place with Nelson Trayfalgar Jr. Tied for fourth to sixth places were John Mark Grasparil, Nick Contreras, and Lou Vincent Baculna. A total of 18 players participated.

Descalzo wins July 2009 Open Chess
















Top seeded Miguel Descalzo, of San Jose, asserted himself this time and convincingly won the July 2009 Open Chess Tournament with a score of 4.5 points out of five rounds. Tied for second to third places were John Mark Grasparil and brother Agaton Grasparil. They finished with 4 points apiece. The tournament was held last July 11-12, 2009 at the Alex and Al Cafe and Snackhouse, Sibalom Antique. A total of 17 players participated.

Vea Alyssa T. Amedo won the 12 Under Chess Tournament held at Alex and Al Cafe and Restaurant on June 13, 2009. Second place went to Flaviano Atienza. Third was April Shannon Rafols. Kenneth Manuel and Jose Maria Anceno got 4th and 5th places respectively.
