Von Aquino wins January 2010 Open Chess

Von Steven Aquino wins the January 2010 Open Chess tournament held at Alex and Al Cafe and Snackhouse, Sibalom, Antique last January 9-10, 2010. Aquino scored 4.5 points in this 5-round Swiss system event besting 23 other participants. Tied with 4 points apiece in second to fourth places were Miguel Descalzo, John Mark Grasparil, and Arnel Amar.

January 2010 Open Chess Tournament

The January 2010 Open Chess Tournament will be on January 9-10, 2010 at the Alex and Al cafe and Snackhouse, Sibalom, Antique. This is open to all interested with no registration fee. Play starts at 9:00 a.m. of January 9. This will be a 5-round Swiss system with one hour play to finish format. Defaulting time is 20 minutes.

Hon. Hector Frangue sponsors Christmas Open Chess Tournament












Hon. Hector Frangue, Sangguniang Panlalawigan member of the Province of Antique, sponsored the just concluded Christmas Open Chess tournament. A young sports-oriented lawyer, SP Hector Frangue pledges his support to the chess activities of the Antique Chess Society and the promotion of the game of chess in the province as well. This is also in support of the Department of Education's (Dep Ed) Memorandum integrating chess in the school curriculum of Grade 4-6 and High School. A study shows that chess improves the analytical ability of a person and helps improve in the mental development of a student. Chess is a game of intelligence.
Von Steven Aquino won the event, his fourth in a row, with 4.5 points. Joselito Castro and Titus Loquias tied for 2nd and 3rd with 4 points apiece. Vea Alyssa Amedo was the best 12 under performer. Snacks were also served courtesy of SP Frangue. SP Hector Frangue promised a bigger chess tournament in the middle of February 2010.

Von Steven Aquino wins De Gracia Memorial Chess Tournament
























Von Steven Aquino scored another convincing tournament victory by capturing the 2nd De Gracia Memorial Chess Tournament last December 12-13, 2009. This year ending tournament of the Antique Chess Society is held in honor of the late Mrs. Juanita G. De Gracia. Von Steven Aquino scored 6.5 points in this 7-round Swiss System event. Seceond place went to Joselito Castro with 5.5 points. Tied in third to fourth places were Miguel Descalzo and Nick Contreras with 5 points. Rhian Namoc was the best female player while the best 12-Under players were Dominic Gille and Charlie Villaflor. 34 players participated.

Antique thrilled by GM So's triumph over Kamsky




The Antique chess players rejoiced over GM Wesley So's triumphed over GM Vassily Ivanchuk and GM Gata Kamsky in the ongoing Chess World Cup. Following the games live in the internet, the chess players rejoiced when the draw was agreed with Kamsky in their second game. Thus GM So will now be in the round of 16 in this knockout format. Congratulations GM Wesley So!!!
