Baculna, 12 under best performer in Iloilo rapid chess

Antique chess has something to be proud of in the recently concluded Rapid Chess Tournament in Iloilo City last February 21-22, 2009. 12 year old Lou Vincent Baculna won the 12 Under Best Performer award. He scored 4 points in 7 rounds in this rapid tournament participated by several National Masters and Master level players.

March 2009 Open Chess Tourney on March 7-8, 2009

The March 2009 Edition of the Monthly Open Chess Tournament will be held on March 7-8, 2009 at the Alex and Al Cafe and Snackhouse, Sibalom, Antique.

This will be on a 5-round Swiss, 1- hour play to finish format. This is open to all interested chess players. No registration fees.

Baculna wins Provincial Chess Tournament

Lou Vincent Baculna handily won the recent Antique Provincial Meet Chess Tournament (Elementary Level) last February 11-13, 2009 held at San Jose Antique. He will be representing the Province of Antique in the coming West Visayan Athletic Meet.

12 Under Tournament on February 28, 2009

The 12 Under tournament is now set on February 28, 2009 at the Alex and Al cafe and Snackhouse, Sibalom, Antique. This will be a one day, five round tournament open to all players 12 years old and below. Prizes will be certificates and chess materials such as chess books etc.

This tournament will now be held monthly. This is also being held in support to the new program of the Dep Ed to include chess in the curriculum of public elementary and high school students. For more inquiries contact 09183700353. No registration fees.

Jun Trayfalgar wins February 2009 Edition Tournament


Nelson 'Jun' Trayfalgar Jr. wins the February 2009 Edition of the Open Chess Tournament held at the Alex and Al Cafe and Snackhouse, Sibalom Antique last February 7-8, 2009.


Trayfalgar finished tied with Miguel Descalzo with 4 points after five rounds but emerged the champion via a higher tie-break.


Third place went to Von Steven Aquino with 3.5 points followed by Deonato Petinglay, Edwin Leabriz, and 12 year old Lou Vincent Baculna with 3 points apiece. Eleven players participated in spite of the rainy day caused by a low pressure.

Baculna, Amedo wins 18-under, 12-under chess






12 year old Lou Vincent Baculna defended his 18-under Title as he convincingly defeated his opponents. Second place went to Carl Arzaga of Belison.
Meanwhile in the 12-under category, 11 year old lady chesser Vea Alyssa T. Amedo won the Title. Second place went to Chian Aldred M. Seraspe.
Aside from the cash incentives, prizes include chess books. The 12-under tournament will now be held monthly instead of bi-monthly.
