Leo Magbanua wins May 2008 Edition Tournament


18 year old Leo Magbanua of San Jose Antique won the May 2008 edition of the Open Chess Tournament held last May 10-11, 2008 at the Alex and Al Cafe and Snackhouse, Sibalom, Antique.

Leo bested 13 other players with a perfect score of 5 points (out of five rounds), a clear point ahead of the next placer. Leo scored exciting wins against Von Aquino in the third round, Jun Trayfalgar in the fourth round, and John Mark Grasparil in the fifth (last) round.

March and April winner Nelson 'Jun' Trayfalgar came second with four points while three players came in tied for third to fifth places namely Miguel Descalzo, John Mark Grasparil, and JR Magbanua.

The upset of the tournament came in the first round when 13 year old Lou Vincent Baculna surprised second seeded Miguel Descalzo.


In spite coming second in the tournament, Nelson Trayfalgar Jr. is still expected to retain his rank as the highest rated player in Antique when their ELO ratings will be computed and released this June.
