Hon. Manny Pacquiao, Congressman of the Lone District of Saranggani, checkmates Shane Mosley in 12 rounds! Yesterday, May 8, 2011 (Philippine time), our superhero, the ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao displayed a superb performance of intelligence, skill, and strength. Like a master chessplayer, he was at least 8 moves ahead of a bewildered Mosley. His punches were so fast that it was just like playing a blitz game. He was patient and confident anticipating Mosley’s moves and countering with an ‘attack all across the board’. From the Opening , the Middle ,and the End game of the match, coach Freddy and Manny Pacquiao had it all well planned. Congratulations Hon. Manny Pacquiao! A true chess player in the boxing ring! 1st NM Rhobel Legaspi Chess Tournament Tournament Regulations: 1. This is an individual open tournament. Tournament shall be played in a five (5) rounds Swiss Pairing. This is a one (1) day event on May 14, 2011. 2. Each player is accorded with a time control of thirty (30) minutes. Prizes: 1. Champion – 1500php plus Trophy 2. 2nd Placer – 750php 3. 3rd Placer – 500php 4. Top Kiddie-250php (for players born 1997 or later) 5. Top Lady-250php 6. *Prizes shall be shared by Tied players. To determined the Champion-Blitz tiebreaks shall be played. 7. *Cash Prizes could still increase! Registration fee is 60php. 30php shall be returned to players who competed for 5 rounds. Arbiters: 1. The game of chess have already been recognized by experts to be very helpful in the mental development of a child. Many countries have already integrated chess in their educational programs. Countries like Russia, Vietnam, China, Israel, Ukraine, India etc. have established chess schools to promote chess further. World reknown leaders like Lenin and Napoleon are known lovers of this game. Chess makes one think. In fact, most chess players excel in analytic subjects especially Math.

Von Steven Aquino overcame an opening round upset and won four straight to emerge solo Champion for the month of April in the monthly open chess tournament held last April 9-10, 2011 at the Alex and Al Cafe and Snackhouse, Sibalom, Antique. Nelson Trayfalgar Jr. finished solo second with 3.5 points. 3rd to 6th places went to John Mark Grasparil, Miguel Descalzo, Arnel Amar, and Deonato Petinglay with 3 points apiece.

NM Rhobel Legaspi and 14 year old Lou Vincent Baculna saved the day for team Antique when they won their respective games in the 9th and final round of the tournament. The Antique chess team finished tied for 11th place along with 8 other teams. Tagaytay City, bannered by GM Wesley So won the tournament. NM Rhobel Legaspi was the highest pointer of the team with 7.5 points out of 9 games and second only to GM Wesley So in individual points in the whole tournament. Lou Vincent Baculna finished well with a very decent 6 points out of 9 games winning 6 games mostly against veteran players. The Antique chess team's participation to this national event was sponsored by Governor Exequiel Javier and Congressman Paulo Javier.

The youthful, good looking Congressman of the lone district of Antique, Hon. Paolo Javier, made a winning move for chess in Antique. Congressman Javier gave financial support for the Antique chess team that will be participating in the forthcoming Inter Province and Cities Chess Tournament to be held in Kalibo Aklan this coming April 1 to 5, 2011. The sportsminded Legislator provided the monetary support out of his own pocket. Such gesture shows a leader with a heart for sports development in this province. He, along with Governor Exequiel Javier, signified their support to the game of chess.

The Antique chess team will be bannered by National Master Rhobel Legaspi of Belison, Nelson Trayfalgar Jr. of San Jose, Arnel Amar of Tibiao, Von Steven Aquino of Sibalom, and 14 year old former Palaro player Lou Vincent Baculna of Sibalom. The Antique chess team is aiming to fight for top honors in this yearly tournament.

Chess in Antique, indeed, is getting big boosts from many corners these days. Blessings have been coming one after the other. Thank you Congressman Paolo Javier! Thank you Governor Exequiel Javier!

Queenie Villaflor wins Gold in WVRAAM

Queenie Villaflor powers her way to a Gold medal finish in Secondary Girls Chess in the recently concluded West Visayan Regional Athletic Meet held in Iloilo City. She will be representing Region VI in the upcoming Palarong Pambansa. Her board 2 teammate Denny Canja took the bronze medal. Together, they took the team Silver Medal. Lou Vincent Baculna took bronze in the boys secondary division. This is just the second time that Antique has won a Gold medal in Chess in the WVRAAM. Three years ago, Lou Vincent Baculna struck Gold in the Elementary Boys Chess in this yearly event. This indicates that Antique chess players are getting stronger in playing strength. Barangay Rombang Belison held a chess tournament yeaterday, June 17 at their barangay hall. Barangay Caotain Elenito B. Baladjay, the newly elected Brgy. Captain of Rombang, pledges to support sports activities such as chess to encourage the youths in the barangay to stay away from drugs and other vices. Well meaning prominent residents of Rombang like Mr. Rodolfo Cortejo and Mr. Ignacio Labios vowed to support the sportsminded barangay captain. Belison has shown remarkable interest in chess due to the active support and patronage of Engr. Nonong del Rosario. Mr. Nonito Delima, an active supporter of chess, helped organized the tournament in Rombang Belison. Hon. The Kangaroo inter-barangay Chess Tournament was held at Diokdiok Recreation Center, Poblacion, Belison, Antique. Edzel Jerome Pagunsan and Edgar Arzaga emerged as co-Champions. 14-yr. old Jessalyn dela Gracia was the best female player. 10 year old Leonard del Rosario received a citation as the youngest participant. Among those present during the awarding were Hon. Mayor Darrel dela Flor, Engr. Regino del Rosarion III, Mr. Nepthali Gravoso, Kagawad Ruben Balbuena, Mr. Nonie Ballarta, Mr. Voltaire Pagunsan, Mr. Siyoy Barcenal, and Mr. Nonette Delima. NM Rhobel Legaspi visited the Antique Chess Society headquarters last April 18, 2010. He conducted a chess clinic for our young players. NM Legaspi led the Antique chess team to a decent finish in the just concluded Povincial Chess Team tournament. The local chess players received valuable tips on how to improve their games. The 29 year old chess master is from Belison Antique but spent most of his life in Metro Manila.

Von Steven Aquino and Miguel Descalzo finished with 6 points apiece to tie for first in the recently concluded SP Hector Frangue Open Chess Tournament. Ferdinand Pallon finished with 5.5 pts to place solo third. Fourth to Ninth Places were Nelson Trayfalgar Jr., Nick Contreras, Jason Loquias, Daryll Asuncion, Cesar Gaitana, and Astley fritz Adrias with 5 points apiece. Tied for tenth to 12th places were John Mark Grasparil, Leo Magbanua, and Apolonio Fadrigo with 4.5 points each. Best female Players were Denny Canja and Mriecris Amerila.

In the Elementary Level, James John Miague of Pandan captured the crown with a perfect score of five points in five rounds. Flaviano Atienza, Regin Erfe, and John Marcie Roa placed second to fourth places with 4 points each. Tied for fith to seventh place were Joyce Fontanilla, Odette Aura Corda, and Grace Calanog with 3.5 points each.

SP Hector Frangue Open Chess Tournament kicks off with a big bang!

The opening day of the SP Hector Frangue Open Chess Tournament kicks off with a big blast! 78 players joined the tournament divided into 2 categories: elementary and open. 30 elementary students joined the elementary category while 48 players joined the open category. The chess club was fully occupied up to the second floor of the building. Lunch was free for the first day. Chess players from the towns of Pandan, Tibiao, Patnongon, Belison, Laua-an, Tobias Fornier, Hamtic, Valderrama, Bugasong, and San Jose participated. Atty. Hector Frangue in good humor said that the tournament was held at Valentines Day because he is still single and not dating anybody at the moment. Hon. Hector Frangue encouraged players from other towns to form their chess clubs in their respected towns. He hopes to sponsor an interclub chess tournament someday. SP Frangue also encouraged those present to support chess as he noted that the Department of Education has already accepted the fact that chess helps in the mental development of a student. The tournament is on a seven round Swiss system format, one hour play to finish. No registration fee is required.

Hon. Hector Frangue, Sangguniang Panlalawigan member of the Province of Antique, sponsored the just concluded Christmas Open Chess tournament. A young sports-oriented lawyer, SP Hector Frangue pledges his support to the chess activities of the Antique Chess Society and the promotion of the game of chess in the province as well. This is also in support of the Department of Education's (Dep Ed) Memorandum integrating chess in the school curriculum of Grade 4-6 and High School. A study shows that chess improves the analytical ability of a person and helps improve in the mental development of a student. Chess is a game of intelligence.
Von Steven Aquino won the event, his fourth in a row, with 4.5 points. Joselito Castro and Titus Loquias tied for 2nd and 3rd with 4 points apiece. Vea Alyssa Amedo was the best 12 under performer. Snacks were also served courtesy of SP Frangue. SP Hector Frangue promised a bigger chess tournament in the middle of February 2010.

Von Steven Aquino scored another convincing tournament victory by capturing the 2nd De Gracia Memorial Chess Tournament last December 12-13, 2009. This year ending tournament of the Antique Chess Society is held in honor of the late Mrs. Juanita G. De Gracia. Von Steven Aquino scored 6.5 points in this 7-round Swiss System event. Seceond place went to Joselito Castro with 5.5 points. Tied in third to fourth places were Miguel Descalzo and Nick Contreras with 5 points. Rhian Namoc was the best female player while the best 12-Under players were Dominic Gille and Charlie Villaflor. 34 players participated.

He scored a perfect 5 points in this five round Swiss system tournament. He defeated Miguel Descalzo, Nelson Trayfalgar, and Arnel Amar in the third to fifth round respectively. Flaviano Atienza wins Under 12 Chess Tournament

11 year old Flaviano Atienza wins the October leg of the quarterly 12 Under Chess Tournament held last October 31, 2009 at the Alex and Al cafe and Snackhouse, Sibalom Antique. The highly confident Atienza won all his games in this five round event.

Defending champion Vea Alyssa Amedo came in second. Third place was Elementary District Meet Champion Joycee M. Tiongco, 10 years old, of Brgy. Imparayan, Sibalom Antique. The next tournament will be on the last week of January 2010.

After more than a year of holding these tournaments, tremendous improvements have been obeserved on playing strengths of these youngsters. A year ago they were merely 'patsy' players. Now, one of them is playing on the strength of a college varsity player! More youngsters have also shown interests in chess as compared to previous years. Natural talent is important but it takes constant practice to really excel in chess.

October Edition of the Open Chess tournament starts

The October Edition of the Open Chess Tournament started yesterday at the Sibalom Water District office. A total of 30 participants joined the tournament. The cash prizes were sponsored by the Sibalom Water District to mark the occasion of its 14th year anniversary.

Hon. Prospero Picahay Jr., LWUA Chairman and NCFP President, was not able to attend due to more important and pressing matters. He was requested by President Arroyo to assist in the relief operations in northern Luzon. He , however, called that his heart is in Sibalom at that moment.

The ceremonial opening moves was done by 13-year old Lou Vincent Baculna, a West Visayan Meet champion and Palaro veteran, and Engr. Jonathan De Gracai, President of the Antique Chess Society and General Manager of Sibalom Water District.

13th Pangpamatan-un nga Torneyo kang Chess sa Sibalom to be conducted
SIBALOM, Antique – The thirteenth yearly edition of the Pangpamatan-un nga Torneyo kang Chess sa Sibalom, a tournament which is open to Sibalomnons who have not yet reached the age of twenty-two years, will be conducted later this month.
The event, named Ilabas 2009 – Pangpamatan-un nga Torneyo kang Chess sa Sibalom, will start on May 27, 2009 at the Alex & Al Café and Snack House in District II, and end on May 28, 2009 at the Ilabas Barangay Hall.
The event is a project of the Sibalom Chess Association which is led by Agaton R. Grasparil III. The event is supported by the following: the Barangay Council of Ilabas which is led by Honorable Gemma Grafane-Tabiling, the Sangguniang Kabataan of Ilabas which is led by Honorable Livelie Ann C. Grafane, and the Sibalom Tree-Planting Movement. The project manager is Von Steven L. Aquino, and the assistant project manager is Benjamen B. Evardone Jr.

And so only eight of the ten winners in the Cubay Sermon 2008 – Pangpamatan-un nga Torneyo kang Chess sa Sibalom are eligible to participate in the upcoming event.
There will be seventeen finalists in the upcoming event, including three automatic finalists from Ilabas, the host-barangay of the upcoming event's last day.

Watching the fight live via pay per view, I cant help but feel admiration for Manny Pacquiao. His entrance song, 'Pilipino ang lahi ko', sung by the Pacman himself, makes one proud to be a Filipino. His usual routine of kneeling down to pray every start of the fight shows that he is a man of faith. His humility is also worth noticing.

Pacquiao is indeed a national hero. If he runs for the Senate, I would surely vote for him. One thing, he do not need to be corrupt because of the, should I say, billions he has already earned from boxing. And one important thing is, he has the heart for every Filipino. The respected management guru Dr. Drucker wrote; "Integrity is better than Genius". This is very true indeed. We have always elected and placed on high Government the most educated, talented, bright people but still our country have gone down to one of the most corrupt in the world. Maybe it is high time now to put more emphasis on Integrity, Sincerity, and Dedication rather then Educational Attainment for our leaders. Manny Pacquiao surely would be a good candidate and leader.

On the other hand, this is a suggestion rather than a criticism. On the next Pacquiao match, whoever is to sing the Lupang Hinirang, please sing it just the way it is. Solemn and not much over arrangement.

The Antique Chess Society Chess Tutorial is having a good start. Kids have been very interested to learning the royal game. Studies have shown that chess develops the childs intelligence and reasoning. They learn how to analyze problems and solve them. Provincial Masters Edwin Leabriz and Von Steven Aquino and Senior Master Nelson Trayfalgar Jr. are the chess tutors. They each have a number of kids under their tutelage. PYAP Regional Encampment Chess tourney

The Antique Chess Society played host to the Pag-asa Youth Association of the Philippines (PYAP) Regional Encampment chess tournament this April 22, 2009. Participated by youths all over Region 6 which included Antique, Iloilo, Negros, Aklan, Capiz and Guimaras.

Provincial DSWD head Mr. Lazaro 'Larry' Petinglay opened the tournament. Provincial Masters John Mark Grasparil and Edwin Leabriz were the arbiters.

Top seeded John Mark Grasparil won the District II Summer Chess Tournament held last April 11 - 12, 2009 at the Alex and Al Cafe and Snackhouse. Edwin Leabriz took second place. This tournament was exclusive only to residents of Brgy. District II, Sibalom, Antique.

The tournament was sponsored by Hon. Belton Java Jr.. First Councilman, District II, Sibalom. Aside from the cash prizes, Hon. Belton Java sponsored snacks. Together with Engr. Emil Ecraela, t-shirts were also given to the chess players.

Lou Vincent Baculna handily won the recent Antique Provincial Meet Chess Tournament (Elementary Level) last February 11-13, 2009 held at San Jose Antique. He will be representing the Province of Antique in the coming West Visayan Athletic Meet.

Nelson 'Jun' Trayfalgar Jr. wins the February 2009 Edition of the Open Chess Tournament held at the Alex and Al Cafe and Snackhouse, Sibalom Antique last February 7-8, 2009.

Trayfalgar finished tied with Miguel Descalzo with 4 points after five rounds but emerged the champion via a higher tie-break.

Third place went to Von Steven Aquino with 3.5 points followed by Deonato Petinglay, Edwin Leabriz, and 12 year old Lou Vincent Baculna with 3 points apiece. Eleven players participated in spite of the rainy day caused by a low pressure.

Baculna, Amedo wins 18-under, 12-under chess

12 year old Lou Vincent Baculna defended his 18-under Title as he convincingly defeated his opponents. Second place went to Carl Arzaga of Belison.
Meanwhile in the 12-under category, 11 year old lady chesser Vea Alyssa T. Amedo won the Title. Second place went to Chian Aldred M. Seraspe.
Aside from the cash incentives, prizes include chess books. The 12-under tournament will now be held monthly instead of bi-monthly.

Provincial Master Nick Contreras wins the January 2009 Open Chess Tournament with an exciting win in the last round over Senior Master Miguel Descalzo. PM Contreras actually finished tied with PM John Mark Grasparil at 4 points apiece after 5 rounds. However, PM Contreras emerged as the champion via higher tie break points.

SM Miguel Descalzo tied with Municipal Master Rex Daguinotan at 3.5 points apiece but finished with a higher tie break to finished Third. Four players finished tied with 3 points to share the prize for the Fifth Place.
